Tsitsipas (23), still a finalist at Roland Garros in 2021, did not know what happened to him against the flashy starting Musetti. The Italian really flew off the starting blocks and came in 2-0 in sets. He gave Tsitsipas little space, so that the Greek only sparsely came into his game. That worked out in the third set, after which it was also 2-2 in sets with 2-6 and 3-6. In set five, after an early break, frustration hit Musetti, after which Tsitsipas still secured a place in the second round.
For Medvedev (26) it is his first victory of this clay-court season. He withdrew from the masters tournaments in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome due to back surgery and lost his first match in Geneva last week, to Richard Gasquet.
Due to the lack of match rhythm, there were great doubts about the form of the Russian, who made a good impression on the Court Suzanne Lenglen. The Australian Open finalist moved well, played varied and finished after an hour and 38 minutes with a curious miss by Bagnis, the world number 103.

Medvedev had never won a match in Paris until last year. In 2021 he reached the last eight and lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas.
In Paris, Medvedev takes office under a neutral flag. The Russian will not be welcome at Wimbledon next month due to the war in Ukraine. Wimbledon bans all tennis players from Russia and Belarus. Medvedev does participate in the grass tournament of Rosmalen in the run-up to that grand slam tournament.
Shapovalov looks surprising
Fourteenth-seeded Denis Shapovalov was eliminated in the opening round. The 23-year-old Canadian had to acknowledge his superiority in three sets in the 19-year-old Dane Holger Rune, the number 40 in the world. It became 6-3 6-1 7-6 (4).
Rune won the Munich ATP tournament at the beginning of this month. In the final, the teenager saw Botic van de Zandschulp give up with breathing problems.
Sabalenka struggles to second round in Paris
Aryna Sabalenka has struggled to reach the second round of Roland Garros. The seventh-seeded tennis player from Belarus defeated France’s Chloé Paquet, the number 101 in the world ranking: 2-6 6-3 6-4, in three sets.
Sabalenka is the number 7 in the world, but was still in second place in the ranking in August. At Roland Garros, the 24-year-old tennis star never managed to get past the third round. She made unnecessary mistakes against Paquet. She handed in her serve twice in the first set. In the second set she was immediately behind a break, but she recovered and won five games in a row and the set 6-3. Sabalenka also came back from a break in the third set. At 5-4 she used her first match point.
Third-placed Paula Badosa easily beat the French Fiona Ferro, who had received a wildcard from the organization in Paris. The Spanish lost only two games: 6-2 6-0.
Simona Halep, winner of the French Grand Slam tournament in 2018, reached the second round by beating German lucky loser Natasja Schunk. For this, the 19th seeded Romanian needed three sets: 6-4 1-6 6-1. Schunk is number 165 in the world.
