Gaming company TOTO, part of the Dutch Lottery and former main sponsor of TV program Today Inside, did not yet say anything about a possible return as a sponsor of the program. “I can’t say anything about it now,” a spokesperson said in response to the return of the TV program. Today Inside will be broadcast again from Monday, with football analyst Johan Derksen.
The TOTO spokesperson also did not want to comment on the commercials in which Today Inside co-host Wilfred Genee plays a role. TOTO stopped sponsoring in and around the program two weeks ago because of statements Derksen made about transgressive behaviour. TOTO then said it “emphatically distanced itself” from Derksen’s statements, “which are extremely hurtful and condescending to victims of sexual violence and in no way show empathy and compassion,” the company said in a statement.
After the statements, a commotion arose, on which April 29 the three presenters, in addition to Derksen also René van der Gijp and Wilfred Genee, decided to resign. Confusion arose on Wednesday when Derksen said in the AD that the triumvirate would return to television on Monday. Van der Gijp stated in RTL Boulevard that he knew nothing about it and Talpa also stated that he found Derksen’s statements “premature”.
On Thursday, Talpa confirmed that the program will be broadcast again. The company further said that Talpa has taken a stand against the way Derksen had told his story and handled the subject. As far as Talpa is concerned, the case is thus closed. “Today Inside remains a program where, among other things, discussions and conversations about various themes are held publicly.”
E-bike specialist Stella Cycling, which also advertised around the program and withdrew its sponsorship, was not yet immediately available for comment.
