That comes as no surprise, because at the beginning of April it became clear that the top of the Volkswagen Group had approved the premier class plans. From 2026, Formula 1 will use new, cheaper engines. The current regulations regarding the power source will be frozen for the coming seasons.
From 2026, the MGU-H, a complex part of the engine’s hybrid system, should disappear. The fuel of the V6 combustion engine must also be completely sustainable.
Porsche seems to be joining forces with Max Verstappen’s Red Bull Racing. Red Bull has set up its own engine department and a collaboration with Porsche has been discussed for some time. Until 2025, Honda will supply the engines from Japan to Red Bull and sister team AlphaTauri.
Audi has long been associated with McLaren, and even with a takeover of that team. Meanwhile, Sauber, as Alfa Romeo active in Formula 1, seems to have the best papers regarding a deal with Audi. Aston Martin is also mentioned.
Verstappen already reacted in Melbourne last month to the entry of Porsche and Audi. “It’s nice to see, and also important for Formula 1. There are ten great teams, but it’s also good that big brands are joining and now show that they are committed. I look forward.”
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner also called the approaching entrance “great news for Formula 1”. “And it makes sense that we have discussions with them,” the Briton referred to Porsche.
