Television production house Endemol returns via a detour to the stock exchange in Amsterdam. The French television company Banijay, which took over the producer of Big Brother and MasterChef a few years ago, will soon be listed on the Damrak.
Banijay CEO and major shareholder Stéphane Courbit has announced that the company should be tradable in Amsterdam at the beginning of July. This is done by bringing Banijay together with another company of his into Pegasus Entepreneurs. This is a so-called spac or empty stock exchange shell that already has a listing on Beursplein 5.
This deal, which Het Financieele Dagblad wrote about earlier, involves more than 4 billion euros. Courbit retains a large part of the shares and also wants to invest more to enable further growth. Banijay is already active as a television producer in many countries.
Endemol arose in the 1990s from a merger of the TV companies of Joop van den Ende and John de Mol. This is not the first time that the company has gone public. Endemol had been listed for a while before the turn of the century until it was bought for billions in 2000 by the Spanish telecom group Telefónica, which brought the company back to the stock market a few years later.
Both periods on the stock market were relatively short-lived. A few years later, investor Apollo acquired a majority of the shares. In 2014, Endemol was merged with production companies Shine and Core Media to form EndemolShine. Banijay came into play in 2019. The acquisition of EndemolShine made Banijay the largest independent TV production house in the world.
