Osaka withdraws from Melbourne semi-final

08.35 am: Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the semi-finals of a WTA tournament in Melbourne, one of the preparatory tournaments for the Australian Open. According to the Japanese, who made her comeback after a four-month absence, her body is having a hard time at the first tournament in a long time.

“Unfortunately, I am suffering from an abdominal injury and I need rest to properly prepare for the Australian Open,” Osaka said in a statement. She would compete in the last four against the Russian Veronika Koedermetova.

The final in Melbourne will be between Koedermetova and Romanian Simona Halep, who defeated China’s Zheng Qinwen 6-3 6-2.

The 24-year-old Osaka took the title at the Australian Open last year. She hadn’t played since the US Open in early September.

Koolhof beats Rojer in Melbourne doubles semi-final

08.12 am: Wesley Koolhof has qualified for the doubles final in Melbourne at the expense of Jean-Julien Rojer. Together with his British partner Neal Skupski, Koolhof was 6-2 6-4 too strong for Rojer, who forms a couple with Marcelo Arévalo from El Salvador.

The 32-year-old Koolhof and Skupski (32) will face the Kazakh Aleksandr Nedovyesov and Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi from Pakistan in the final battle.

Koolhof and Rojer formed a permanent duo last year. They participated together in the Olympic Games, where Rojer tested positive for the corona virus. After disappointing performances, they both decided to look for a new doubles partner for 2022.

De Jong misses the final on Australian challenger

08.12 am: Jesper de Jong failed to reach the final of the challenger tournament in Traralgon. 21-year-old De Jong lost 6-4 6-2 to fourth-seeded Czech Tomas Machac in the semi-final.

In the quarterfinals, De Jong had booked a great victory over the first-seeded Frenchman Gilles Simon (6-4 6-1), the former number 6 in the world. De Jong is currently in 203rd place in the global ranking and was placed 12th in Traralgon.

De Jong is now traveling to Melbourne for the qualifications of the Australian Open, which will take place next week. The main tournament starts on Monday 17 January.

“What I know about him is that he has done a fantastic job at Ajax and that he is an experienced coach,” Ronaldo said on the club’s website. “We have to give him time and things have to change the way he wants. I hope we will have success, because when you have success, the whole city benefits.”

Team Van der Poel does not want refugees to run any further | NOW

134 km to go – Van der Poel’s Alpecin-Fenix is supported by Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert. Not so strange, because the Belgian formation also has one of the favorites for the stage victory on board, the Eritrean Girmay.

139 km to go – An impasse between the escapees and the peloton. The difference has been hovering around six minutes for some time now.

Another 166 km – The escapees’ lead has already increased to almost six minutes and that is the signal for Alpecin-Fenix to intervene. Mathieu van der Poel’s team is at the head of the pack.

170 km to go – The lead of the three men in the lead is getting bigger and bigger. They already have a margin of 4.5 minutes on the peloton, which has still not started.

Still 177 km – The pace in the peloton then stops, so that the lead of the three refugees increases quickly. Naesen, Bais and De Marchi drive with a margin of two minutes on the long, flat roads along the Adriatic coast.

185 km to go – Lawrence Naesen (AG2R Citroën), Mattia Bais (Drone Hopper) and Alessendro de Marchi (Israel – Premier Tech) are doing everything they can to stay away, but calm has not yet returned to the peloton. The Belgian and the Italians have a lead of barely twenty seconds.

191 km to go – Three riders were in it to make a hole: the Belgian Naesen gets the Italians De Marchi and Bais with him. The difference is still small.

Start! The stage has started and a number of riders immediately try to jump away from the peloton.

So first there is a long flat run-up. The first climb only appears after 100 kilometers of course.

The riders are on their bikes for the neutralized part of the stage. Does it rain immediately after the official go-ahead?
