Baseball league MLB will return to London from 2023

00.16 hours: The American baseball league MLB will play games again in London from 2023. It will be the first games in Major League Baseball on English soil since 2019 when the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees played two games at the Olympic Stadium. Both matches were attended by some 60,000 spectators.

London will host regular matches in 2023, 2024 and 2026, the long-term agreement shows. London Mayor Sadiq Khan spoke of a “historic day for London and baseball.”

“All aspects of the MLB games in London have been an overwhelming success,” said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred of the games three years ago. “It was clear that London sports fans had a great appetite for baseball and that passion was shared by Mayor Khan as well as business and the media.”

Thiem also loses fifth game in Rome since comeback

9.54 pm: Dominic Thiem has also lost his fifth game since his return to the tennis tour. In the first round of the masters tournament in Rome, the Italian Fabio Fognini beat him 6-4 7-6 (5).

Thiem cleared another match point in the second set with a 5-4 deficit, on the service of the public favorite, but in the tiebreak that followed shortly afterwards, the number 57 in the world still finished it.

Thiem, 28, returned at the end of March after a lingering wrist injury. Since then he also lost his first match in Marbella, Belgrade, Estoril and Madrid. Next week he will make his appearance at the Geneva tournament, where he prepares for Roland Garros.

Thiem, who has fallen to place 162 in the world ranking, is the former number 3 in the world. He won the US Open in 2020.

FIFA rejects appeals against Brazil-Argentina overplay

5:19 p.m.: FIFA has rejected Brazil and Argentina appeals against replaying their World Cup qualifier. The game between the two countries was stopped after a few minutes on September 5 of last year. Both countries are already certain of participating in the World Cup.

The match between Brazil and Argentina lasted exactly six minutes. Officials from the Brazilian health authorities took to the field to force some Argentine players into quarantine. Then there was total chaos and for that reason the match was stopped. The countries see little use in playing out or replaying the game.

“After analyzing the appeals of both sides and considering all the circumstances of the case, the appeals committee has confirmed that the game should be replayed,” the World Football Association said in a statement.

The fines received by the federations of both national federations have been reduced.

Remarkably, Brazil and Argentina, who have 45 and 39 points respectively after 17 World Cup qualifiers, will also play a friendly match against each other in Melbourne on June 11 of this year. The game will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, a stadium that can accommodate 100,000 spectators.

Heracles completes competition without Sonnenberg after red card

3:52 pm: Heracles Almelo closes the competition without defender Sven Sonnenberg. The German was sent off with a red card in the injury time of the 2-0 away game against Willem II on Saturday. It resulted in Sonnenberg being banned from three matches, one of which was conditional.

The 23-year-old substitute, who played his ninth game for Heracles, slipped wildly with his leg stretched high and hit Jelte Pal. Referee Allard Lindhout initially drew the yellow card, but after the intervention of the VAR and looking back at the TV images, he converted it into red.

Heracles is in thirteenth place in the Eredivisie and closes the competition with matches against RKC Waalwijk (Wednesday) and Sparta Rotterdam (Sunday).

Feyenoord will have to face Go Ahead Eagles on Wednesday without left back Tyrell Malacia. The international of Orange received his fifth yellow card of the season against PSV (2-2) on Sunday and is therefore suspended.

Grand slam winner Cilic to tennis tournament Rosmalen

3.31 pm: Marin Cilic will participate in the tennis tournament in Rosmalen early next month. The 33-year-old Croat, the current number 23 in the world, was already present on the grass of Autotron in 2017. Cilic then reached the semifinals of the Dutch ATP tournament.

In the weeks that followed, the Croat won the Queen’s grass tournament and made it to the Wimbledon final, in which Cilic lost out to Roger Federer. The veteran has twenty ATP titles on his honors list, with the US Open of 2014 as the highlight.

The organization of the Libéma Open (4-12 June) previously announced the arrival of, among others, Daniil Medvedev (the number 2 in the world), Félix Auger-Aliassime, David Goffin and Botic van de Zandschulp. Olympic champions Belinda Bencic and Elise Mertens participate in the women’s tournament. The past two editions of the Dutch tournament were canceled due to the corona virus.

Diamond League finals divided between Brussels and Zurich

3:06 PM: The finals of the leading Diamond League athletics competition series have been allocated to Brussels and Zurich for the years from 2024 to 2027. The cities alternate. The Memorial Van Damme in Brussels will host the final in 2024 and 2026, the Weltklasse in Zurich will host in 2025 and 2027. In 2026, the final of the Diamond League will coincide with the fiftieth edition of the Memorial Van Damme.

The final of the Diamond League will also be held in Zurich on September 7 and 8. The winner of each event will win $30,000. The series starts next Friday in Doha (Qatar).

In 2023, the American Eugene (Oregon) may organize the final. The World Athletics Championships will be held in that city this summer.

Osaka withdraws injured from tournament in Rome

2:35 pm: Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from this week’s tennis tournament in Rome. The four-time Grand Slam winner is still suffering too much from an Achilles tendon injury.

Osaka was injured at the beginning of this month during her lost duel with the Spanish Sara Sorribes Tormo at the Madrid tournament. “I have to be careful with my Achilles tendon injury, also with a view to Roland Garros,” she said.

Osaka has never been in a clay court final. The former number 1 in the world rankings will be replaced this week in Rome by Spain’s Nuria Parrizas Dias. Osaka is now in 38th position in the world ranking.

Wawrinka records first victory in more than a year in Rome

13.39 o’clock: Stan Wawrinka has won a match for the first time in fifteen months. The 37-year-old Swiss, who has three Grand Slam titles on his honors list, defeated Reilly Opelka in the first round of the masters tournament in Rome. Wawrinka battled in three sets against the fourteenth seeded American, the number 17 in the world: 3-6 7-5 6-2.

The Swiss made his comeback at the end of March, after being sidelined for a year due to a foot injury. He had to undergo surgery twice. Wawrinka, once the world’s number 3, has dropped to 361 in the global ranking due to all the physical problems of recent years.

Wawrinka was eliminated in the first round at both the Marbella challenger and the Monte Carlo masters tournament in recent weeks. On the clay in Rome he could celebrate his first victory since February last year. Wawrinka then won the first round of the Australian Open, but was subsequently eliminated.

Hockey club Bloemendaal strictly Argentine striker Granatto

12.05 pm: The Argentine international Maria José ‘Majo’ Granatto will play next season at Bloemendaal in the first division hockey. The 27-year-old Granatto has already played more than a hundred times for the Argentine team and has scored more than sixty international goals. Last summer she played with Argentina in the final of the Olympic Games in Tokyo, in which the Dutch hockey players were 3-1 too strong.

“We are very happy with the arrival of an absolute top striker like Majo Granatto,” says Koen Hemmes of the Bloemendaal women’s top hockey committee. “At the moment we lack real punch in the front, something to which she can of course add a lot. This will not only lead to more goals, but also more penalty corners.”

Granatto, who was chosen as the greatest talent in the world in 2016 and 2017, has previously played for Oranje-Rood in the Netherlands.
