Serious knee injury for Dutch KV Mechelen defender Bijker
3:26 pm: The Dutch left back Lucas Bijker of KV Mechelen has suffered a serious knee injury. He is expected to be sidelined for six to nine months because he tore the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee.
The 29-year-old Bijker has been playing in Mechelen since 2018. In the past he played in the Eredivisie for the Frisian clubs SC Cambuur and SC Heerenveen. In 2017 he exchanged Heerenveen for a short-lived adventure at Cádiz, where the Belgian club picked him up.
KV Mechelen finished seventh in the regular season and is participating in the play-offs for participation in the Conference League. There are still four games to play.
Gerard Pique drops out injured at FC Barcelona
12.23 pm: Gerard Pique cannot play for FC Barcelona for the time being. The experienced defender is struggling with a thigh injury. Barcelona’s medical staff cannot yet say how long he will be out. Barcelona will play an away game against Real Betis on Saturday and close the Spanish league with matches against Celta de Vigo (May 10), Getafe (May 15) and Villarreal (May 22).
Barcelona is the number 2 in La Liga. The club will qualify for the new edition of the Champions League if it finishes in the top four. Barcelona is 8 points ahead of Real Betis, the current number 5 in the ranking.
Real Madrid secured the league title last Saturday.
Shirin Van Anrooij longer with Baloise Trek Lions and Trek-Segafredo
11.57 am: Shirin Van Anrooij has extended her contract with Baloise Trek Lions (cyclocross) and Trek-Segafredo (road cycling) by three years. 20-year-old Van Anrooij, who combines cyclo-cross with road cycling, is the reigning European cyclo-cross champion in the U23 category and came second at the U23 World Championships. Van Anrooij is now on hold until the end of 2025.
“The cross training in Belgium, the guidance in domestic and foreign competitions, the tips and tricks of, among others, teammates Lars van der Haar and Lucinda Brand during the competitions. All those things add up to make me feel at home in this environment and that I can be myself completely,” said Van Anrooij about her contract extension.
Van Anrooij booked her first professional victory last winter in the American Iowa. She then became European champion in the U23 category in her own country and finished second at the World Championships in Fayetteville, USA, behind compatriot Puck Pieters. On the road, she finished ninth in the Strade Bianche this spring.
Tallon Greek track makes a comeback at masters tournament Rome
10.20 am: Tallon Valentijn will make his comeback at the masters tournament in Rome next weekend. The number 2 in the Netherlands struggled with a neck injury for several weeks. He resumed training last Saturday.
The 25-year-old Greek track, the number 57 in the world, withdrew from the clay tournaments in Barcelona, Munich and Madrid. He has been waiting for a win at the highest level for almost three months. At the beginning of February, he reached the second round of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam.
Greek track will play in Rome in the qualifiers, Botic van de Zandschulp has been directly admitted to the main tournament.
At the end of last year, Greek track recorded a series of 26 victories in a row. He has only won four times this season.
Phoenix and Miami lead more firmly in play-offs
07:31 am: The Phoenix Suns basketball players also won their second game against the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA (Western Conference) playoff semifinals. Devin Booker and Chris Paul had a large share in the home win (129-109). Booker made 21 of his 30 points in the second half of the game. Paul was good for 28 points and eight assists.
Luka Doncic scored 35 points for the Mavericks. Both teams will meet on Friday in Dallas for the third game. The first team to win four times advances to the next round. The Suns won the Western Conference last year and lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals.
The Miami Heat took a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Philadelphia 76ers (119-103). Bam Adebayo made 23 points for the winning team. Jimmy Butler contributed with 22 points to the victory. Miami will visit Philadelphia on Friday after two home games.
