Ukraine replaces Russia as participant in Volleyball World Cup

3:05 PM: Ukraine can compete in the Volleyball World Cup as a replacement for Russia. The tournament was supposed to be held in Russia this summer, but the FIVB international volleyball federation decided to move the World Cup in early March due to the Russian military invasion of Ukraine. That country is now taking over the place in the field of participants from the Russians.

Poland and Slovenia are the new host countries. More countries may be added, according to the FIVB. According to chairman Ary Graça, several countries have offered to help organize the World Cup. “We are proud that we have found this solution,” said the Brazilian.

Poland has won the last two men’s World Cups and is therefore partly defending the title in its own country. The tournament will run from August 26 to September 11. The final and the battle for bronze are in Poland. The Dutch team is one of the participants. The Orange squad is classified in group F, with Argentina, Iran and Egypt as opponents.

Owner Chicago Cubbs abandons Chelsea purchase

2:46 pm: A consortium led by the American Ricketts family has withdrawn as a prospective buyer of Chelsea. The Ricketts family, owner of baseball club Chicago Cubs, together with several billionaires from the US wanted to take over the English football club from Russian businessman Roman Abramovich. However, the consortium is now refraining from doing so because of ‘the unusual dynamics’ surrounding the sale process.

Abramovich wants to sell Chelsea because of the war in Ukraine. The Russian is on a British government sanctions list because he is said to have close ties to President Vladimir Putin. Chelsea therefore has to deal with all kinds of restrictions. The football club, which won the Champions League last year, can continue to play with a special license.

The Ricketts family had promised Chelsea supporters, among other things, that they would never participate in a Super League if it were to take ownership of the club. The Americans also wanted to investigate whether Stamford Bridge stadium could be expanded.

After the Ricketts consortium has dropped out, three candidate buyers remain. One of these is Stephen Pagliuca, co-owner of the Boston Celtics basketball club and the Italian football club Atalanta. The American bank Raine Group supervises the sales process.

Cyclist Ewan records second victory in Tour of Turkey

2.11 pm: Cyclist Caleb Ewan has his second stage win in the Tour of Turkey. The Australian from Lotto-Soudal won the sixth stage after 201.5 kilometers between Edremit and Eceabat in the sprint. After a difficult final phase, he was ahead of the Belgian Jasper Philipsen and Danny van Poppel.

Ewan had previously won the first stage in the Turkish stage race. His second win in Turkey will be Ewan’s fifth win in 2022.

The leader’s jersey in the Tour of Turkey remains on the shoulders of the Argentinian Eduardo Sepúlveda. The stage race ends in Istanbul on Sunday.

Ewan was launched by his teammates after the climb a few kilometers from the finish and finished it off. “I am stronger than three years ago,” said the Australian, who did not come into play in 2019 in the stage with a similar final. “It was a tough final, but my teammates did a great job and I’m happy to finish their work.”

The sprinter said when asked that it is special for an Australian to be able to win on the Gallipoli peninsula. “An important piece of our history is here,” he said of the site where Australian troops suffered heavy casualties in World War I.

Hockey players Den Bosch to EHL semifinals

13:29: The hockey players of Den Bosch have reached the semi-finals of the Euro Hockey League (EHL) with a great display of power. The defending champion defeated the Irish club Pegasus in the Wagener stadium in Amstelveen 9-0.

Frédérique Matla scored five goals, Pleun van der Plas scored twice. The other goals came from Joosje Burg and Lidewij Welten. “A fun game with many goals,” said Matla about the one-sided game.

Den Bosch will face Belgian champions Gent in the semifinals on Saturday, who defeated English club Surbiton 2-1. The final of the most prestigious club tournament in Europe is on Easter Monday.

Matla gave Den Bosch the overall victory in the first edition of the EHL for women last year. The international of Orange then scored three goals in the final against Club Campo de Madrid from Spain (5-0). The Spanish club is now the opponent of Amsterdam in the quarterfinals later on Friday.

Cuadrado longer at Juventus

13:26: Colombian winger Juan Cuadrado will also play for Juventus next season. The 33-year-old international’s contract, which was due to expire next summer, has been extended by one year.

Cuadrado has been wearing Juventus’ black and white since 2015. Before that, he played for Udinese, Fiorentina and Chelsea, among others. The winger became champion of Italy five times with Juventus.

“Cuadrado is a wing striker, a wing back and a midfielder. He is unique and irreplaceable,” said Juventus on the website in a kind of tribute to the 111-time international of Colombia, a fixed value in the team of trainer Massimiliano Allegri. Juventus, the club of Matthijs de Ligt, is in fourth place in the Serie A.

Barcelona have lost injured Pedri for the rest of the season

12:29 pm FC Barcelona will probably have to do without Pedri for the rest of the season. The Spanish midfielder had to be replaced in the Europa League on Thursday during half-time against Eintracht Frankfurt. The 19-year-old Pedri appears to have torn a muscle in his left thigh. Barcelona did not disclose how long he will be out, but according to Spanish media, Pedri’s season is likely already over.

The Spanish international was relieved by Frenkie de Jong, who had started on the bench. Barcelona already trailed 2-0 halfway through the game and eventually lost 3-2 to Frankfurt. After last week’s 1-1 in Germany, trainer Xavi’s team was eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Pedri had been out for some time earlier this season due to hamstring injuries. He only played twelve games in the Spanish league. Pedri hardly had any vacation last summer. After a long season with Barcelona, he also participated in the European Championship and the Olympic Games with the national team.

The Spaniard was named Europe’s Golden Boy (greatest talent) last year and also received the Kopa trophy, France Football’s prize for the greatest talent.

Chelsea have Lukaku back for FA Cup semi-final

11:30 am Chelsea have Romelu Lukaku back for the semi-final in the FA Cup tournament against Crystal Palace. The two clubs from London will meet at Wembley on Sunday. Lukaku was missing Tuesday due to Achilles tendon complaints in the return against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. However, he rejoined the group training two days later.

Tuchel only misses Ben Chilwell and Callum Hudson-Odoi against Crystal Palace. “Everyone is fine otherwise. We have a big game at Wembley on the schedule. We want to go to the final.” The other finalist will come from the match between Manchester City and Liverpool on Saturday.

Ajax and PSV will probably play for Johan Cruijff Scale at the end of July

11:15 am The winner of the KNVB Cup not only qualifies for the match for the Johan Cruijff Scale, but is also sure of a ticket for the play-offs of the preliminary rounds of the new edition of the Europa League.

There is a good chance that Ajax and PSV will play football on July 30 or July 31 for the win of the Johan Cruijff Scale. Both clubs seem to finish first or second in the Eredivisie. The champion qualifies for the group stage of the Champions League, the number 2 may participate in the preliminary round of the premier class for European club teams.

If the cup winner becomes champion or second in the Eredivisie, the number 3 of the final classification may participate in the play-offs for a place in the group stage of the Europa League. In that case, the numbers 4 to 7, but the numbers 5 to 8 of the Eredivisie will not play the play-offs for European football after the regular competition.

Feyenoord is the current number 3 in the Eredivisie, with 11 points less than leader Ajax. PSV has a 7-point lead over Feyenoord.

Golfer DeChambeau has to rehabilitate for two months after wrist surgery

09:33 o’clock Golfer Bryson DeChambeau has had surgery on his left wrist. The 28-year-old American expects to be able to participate in tournaments again in two months. That means he will likely miss the PGA Championship in May.

DeChambeau, the 2020 US Open winner, broke a bone in his hand when he slipped while playing a game of table tennis. The golfer had already suffered a hip injury last fall.

„I have tried to play with this injury during three tournaments, including the Masters. But this is really an injury that requires surgery,” the American wrote on Instagram with a photo in a hospital bed. “Because I suffered from that fracture, it had an effect on my grip and my swing. Because of that, I couldn’t play golf at the highest level.”

Basketball player Curry available for Golden State Warriors

08:49 am Basketball player Stephen Curry can make his comeback with the Golden State Warriors at the start of the playoffs. The 34-year-old basketball player sustained an ankle injury in mid-March, but is available again. Golden State Warriors take on Denver Nuggets in the playoffs. The first game is on Sunday.

Curry said he doesn’t necessarily have to be 100 percent. “If I feel I can help the team and contribute, then I will play,” he said. The basketball player has led his team to the title in the American professional league three times in recent years.

According to coach Steve Kerr, Curry is ready. “Many boys would have physical problems after a month’s break after playing for two minutes. But Stephen is in such good form, he has an incredible base condition.”
