AMSTERDAM – In the Sport Kort section, Telesport pays attention to the daily news. This section is continuously updated throughout the day with the latest news.

IOC still does not rule out Russian officials

12:20 p.m.: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) still does not want to exclude Russian officials, despite the ongoing war in Ukraine. The IOC refers to the Olympic charter, which states that IOC members do not represent the countries they come from. “They have been individually elected by the IOC and are sent as ambassadors of the IOC to sports organizations of their countries,” said an IOC statement.

Shortly after the outbreak of the war, the IOC did advise all affiliated sports associations to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes from international events. But that is no longer enough, according to Switzerland, now that the war continues. The Minister of Sports and Defense has urged the IOC to exclude Russian and Belarusian officials from top positions in international sports federations. Switzerland is not only home to the IOC, but many major sports federations also have their headquarters there.

Suspended countries Zimbabwe and Kenya just in Africa Cup draw

10:56 AM: The suspended countries Zimbabwe and Kenya will join the draw for the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualification on Tuesday. The African Football Association CAF assumes that the suspensions will be lifted before the first matches start in June.

World football association FIFA has banned both countries from competitions and tournaments because of government interference in football associations. A government agency in Zimbabwe fired the board of the national football association because the board members could not justify certain expenditures of government funds. In Kenya, the Ministry of Sports dissolved the board of the national football association because chairman Nick Mwendwa has been accused of fraud.

The CAF expects FIFA to lift the suspensions in mid-May. If not, Zimbabwe and Kenya will still be banned from participating in the Africa Cup qualifiers. In that case, after the draw there will be two groups with three instead of four clubs, with the best two qualifying for the final round in 2023 in Ivory Coast.

Jokic, Embiid and Antetokounmpo candidates for NBA best player title

10.32 am: Serbian basketball player Nikola Jokic has another chance to be named the NBA’s best player of the past regular season. The Denver Nuggets player is among the three finalists in the election.

His competitors for the coveted title of most valuable player are the Cameroonian Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers and the Greek Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Embiid finished as the best shooter in the regular season with an average of 30.6 points. Antetokounmpo is the star player of Milwaukee Bucks, the team that won the NBA championship last year. He was voted most valuable player in 2019 and 2020.

The three finalists reached the play-offs with their clubs and are still in the running for this year’s title.

Spieth plays away frustration with failed Masters with thirteenth victory

10:30 a.m.: American golfer Jordan Spieth has recorded his 13th win on the American PGA pro tour. The 28-year-old Texan won the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head Island (South Carolina).

Spieth needed 66 strokes, five under par, for his fourth and final round, and the low score pushed him from ninth to a tie for first place with fellow countryman Patrick Cantlay. In the decisive play-off, Spieth was the best.

Tatum gives basketball players Celtics victory in the last second

10 a.m.: The Boston Celtics kick off the NBA playoffs with a narrow win over Brooklyn Nets: 115-114. The throw that yielded the winning points came in the last second of the game. Jayson Tatum got his hands on the ball and laid up just before the end buzzer.

Kevin Durant could have helped the Nets to victory just seconds before, but his shot from distance missed the basket, leaving the lead 114-113 and allowing the Celtics to strike in the seconds remaining.

‘Matchwinner’ Tatum was also the top scorer for his team in the first round playoff game. He came to 31 points. Kyrie Irving was the top scorer for the Nets with 39 points.

Phoenix Suns, the best team in the regular season and therefore placed first in the playoffs in the Western Conference, beat the eighth seeded New Orleans Pelicans 110-99. Chris Paul made 30 points for the Suns and he was especially on the move in the fourth quarter. Paul prevented a comeback from the Pelicans with 19 points.

Werder Bremen back to Bundesliga, HSV plays for promotion

6.24 pm: The German football club Werder Bremen returns to the Bundesliga after a one-year absence, just like Schalke 04. The club from Bremen won the last league match 2-0 against Jahn Regensburg and therefore finished second in the 2. Bundesliga with 63 points, good for promotion.

Hamburger SV can prepare for two duels for promotion/relegation against the number 16 of the Bundesliga, Hertha BSC. HSV, where Dutch youth international Ludovit Reis provided an assist, won the last game 3-2 at Hansa Rostock and finished third with 60 points. Darmstadt 98 also came with a 3-0 win over Paderborn on 60 points, but has a less goal difference.

Schalke 04 won 2-1 at 1. FC Nürnberg to take the title at the second level in Germany. The team from Gelsenkirchen, where Thomas Ouwejan plays, already secured promotion last week.

Boxer Heijnen through to quarterfinals at World Cup

5:05 p.m.: Boxer Chelsey Heijnen has qualified for the quarterfinals in the category up to 63 kilograms at the world championships in Istanbul, Turkey. Heijnen defeated Mariatou Diallo from Senegal in the second round in just over 2 minutes.

On Wednesday, Heijnen qualified for the second round when she beat Bolivian Maria Eugenia Ortega.

The quarter-finals at the World Cup are scheduled for Monday. Heijnen is the only Dutch participant in the World Cup in Istanbul.

Bastianini fastest in MotoGP for third time

3.17 pm: Motorcycle racer Enea Bastianini has recorded his third win of the season in MotoGP. The Italian on his Ducati was the fastest in the French Grand Prix at the Le Mans circuit. Australian Jack Miller (Ducati) finished second and Spaniard Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia) was third.

French home rider Fabio Quartararo drove a fairly invisible race, but he finished fourth and the Yamaha rider retained the championship lead. He did see Bastianini and Espargaro come closer in points. Quartararo, also the reigning world champion, has amassed 102 points, Espargaro came in at 98 points and Bastianini climbed to third place in the World Cup standings with 94 points.

Franscesco Bagnaia (Ducati) was in the lead for most of the race, but the Italian didn’t make it to the end. He started from pole position, saw teammate Miller pass in the first corner, but took the lead again after a few laps. With seven laps to go, Bastianini placed a successful attack on the lead. Bagnaia tried to counter, but he went a little too wide in his enthusiasm and fell behind. Moments later, there was even a crash and his race was over.

“I’m very happy with it, because this win was quite unexpected,” said Bastianini. “The weekend here was quite difficult, but in the race I suddenly felt that the speed was good and I got into my rhythm.”

The French GP ended in disappointment for Suzuki. The Japanese team, which announced before the race in Le Mans it would leave MotoGP after this season, saw its Spanish drivers Alex Rins and Joan Mir retire after crashes.

SCHC against Den Bosch in championship final

3.16 pm: The SCHC hockey players will compete for the national title with defending champion Den Bosch. The decisive third play-off against Amsterdam at home in Bilthoven ended in 2-2, after which the home team was better in the shoot-outs. SCHC used three, Amsterdam one.

SCHC won the first game at Amsterdam earlier this week, even after shoot-outs. On Saturday, the second play-off ended 2-0 for Amsterdam, requiring a third game. Den Bosch also won HDM’s second game in the semi-finals on Saturday and will meet SCHC in the final.

Felice Albers gave Amsterdam the lead from a penalty corner. That was her first goal of the season. Yibbi Jansen took care of the equalizer on behalf of SCHC before half time. In the third quarter, Amsterdam quickly took the lead again, when a cross from Marijn Veen ended up in the goal via the stick of SCHC player Anna de Geus. About 7 minutes before time, Ginella equalized Zerbo again. After Noor de Baat had not used her shoot-out in time on behalf of Amsterdam, SCHC was certain of the first final for the club’s national title since 2015.

Czech Republic in Nations League without Leverkusen top scorer Schick

2:38 pm: Top scorer Patrik Schick of the German football club Bayer Leverkusen has to undergo an operation on his groin. The Czech therefore misses next month’s international matches in the Nations League. Leverkusen assumes that Schick will be fit again in preparation for the new season.

The 26-year-old attacker scored 24 goals in the Bundesliga, finishing second in the top scorers list behind Robert Lewandowski (35 goals). Leverkusen finished third thanks to Schick’s goals and qualified for the Champions League.

The club of the Dutchmen Mitchel Bakker, Daley Sinkgraven, Jeremie Frimpong and Timothy Fosu-Mensah will go to Mexico without the Czech to end the season. The German team plays there, among other things, a few exhibition games.

The Czech Republic is in the A-division of the Nations League and will take on Switzerland, Spain and Portugal next month in the group. The Czechs have failed to qualify for the World Cup at the end of this year in Qatar.

Svitolina misses the next tennis season because of pregnancy

2.13 pm: Elina Svitolina will not play for the rest of the season. The 27-year-old Ukrainian announced via Twitter that she and her husband Gaël Monfils are expecting a baby in October. Svitolina, the current number 27 in the world, is therefore sidelined for the time being.

“Filled with love and happiness, we announce that we are expecting a girl in October,” Svitolina captioned a photo of her and Monfils on Twitter. Svitolina and Monfils, the world’s number 21 among men, got married in the spring of 2021.

Earlier this week, Svitolina announced that she would not participate in Roland Garros this year. The tennis star then said she had other things on her mind after the Russian invasion of her native country. “Right now my focus is on my family and my foundation. Mentally it is very exhausting to see those terrible things happen to my compatriots and family.”

At the end of March, Svitolina, former number 3 in the world, already announced that she would take a break to relax. She did not indicate when she wanted to return to the tennis court. Svitolina last played in the highly regarded Miami tournament. There she lost in the second round to Heather Watson.

Few points for Bendsneyder after difficult Moto2 race Le Mans

13:32: Motorcycle racer Bo Bendsneyder has 2 points left for the World Cup after a difficult race in Moto2. The Rotterdammer finished 14th in the Grand Prix of France at the Le Mans circuit. He had started from 8th place, but fell way back on the first lap. Bendsneyder then had to work hard to finish in the top 15 and score World Cup points.

Zonta van den Goorbergh finished 17th and that was his best result yet in Moto2. The 16-year-old debutant in the World Championships motorcycle race started 25th in the race, in which many riders flew off the track.

The happened, among others, to Spaniard Pedro Acosta, who fell as leader halfway through the race and retired. His compatriot Augusto Fernandez took over the first position and did not relinquish it. He recorded his fourth Moto2 victory.

Italian Celestino Vietti retained the championship lead. He finished 8th after a race to catch up from 18th on the grid.

Titles 10 kilometers to athletes Maas and Herzog

1.16 pm: Runner Luuk Maas has won the Dutch title in the 10 kilometers on the road at the Weir Venloop in Venlo. The 22-year-old athlete crossed the finish line after 29.41 minutes. Filmon Tesfu finished second at 9 seconds (29.50) and grabbed the silver. The bronze medal went to Tom Hendrikse (29.56).

For Maas it was his second Dutch title in a short time. He also won the Dutch National Championships half marathon in Nijmegen in March.

The women’s title went to Marcella Herzog, who won the race in 33.55. Jennifer Gulikers won the silver in 34.12 and the bronze went to Leonie Balter in 34.22.

NOC*NSF wants 80 percent of the Dutch to exercise in 2032

11.09 am: The members of the NOC*NSF sports umbrella will most likely agree on Monday evening with the Sports Agenda 2032. Fifty sports associations contributed to the plan for what sport should look like in ten years’ time, so that it looks like a hammering piece. “We have discussed where we want to go with all those unions,” explains general director Marc van den Tweel of NOC*NSF. “Simply put: we want 80 percent of the Dutch population to exercise at least three times a week by then.”

American boxer Charlo world champion at four federations

11:01 am: American boxer Jermell Charlo is the undisputed world superwelterweight champion. He is the first ever boxer in his class to hold the belts of the four global federations. Charlo, 31, won the WBO world title on Saturday (local time) by beating Argentinian Brian Castano. He hit it against the canvas in the tenth round.

Charlo already held the world titles of the WBA, WBC and IBF federations. He is the seventh boxer to manage to hold the four major championship belts at the same time. The six men who previously did so are Bernard Hopkins (middleweight), Jermain Taylor (middleweight), Terence Crawford (super lightweight), Oleksandr Oesyk (medium weight), Josh Taylor (super lightweight) and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (super middleweight).

For Charlo it was the 35th victory of his career (a undecided, a defeat). The 32-year-old Castano suffered his first defeat in twenty professional fights (two undecided).

Track cyclists Havik and Van Schip take gold on the torque in Nations Cup

10.17 am: Track cyclists Yoeri Havik and Jan-Willem van Schip have won gold on the coupling race on the third day of the Nations Cup in Milton, Canada. The reigning European champions in this section scored the most points (74) after a sophisticated race. The British couple Ethan Hayter and Rhys Britton took the silver (66 points) and the bronze went to the Germans Theo Reinhardt and Tim Torn Teutenberg (47 points).

It was the second medal for Hawk. He won silver on Friday in the elimination race.

Kyra Lamberink just missed a medal in the 500 meter time trial. She finished fourth, 0.825 seconds behind Australia’s Kristina Clonan, who won in a time of 32.987.

Top sprinter Jeffrey Hoogland, who was still good for gold in the team sprint on Thursday, was not involved in the keirin part. He was eliminated in the repechage.

The Nations Cup matches in Canada last until Sunday. The third and final match is scheduled for July in the Colombian city of Cali.

‘VeeKay’ plays supporting role at Indianapolis Grand Prix

9.27 am: Race car driver Rinus (Veekay) van Kalmthout was unable to play a significant role in the Indianapolis Grand Prix in the IndyCar. The Dutchman, who won the race last year, suffered damage early in the race from a collision with Canadian Devlin DeFrancesco and fell behind. He finished 23rd.

American Colton Herta triumphed in the fifth race of the IndyCar championship. In an incidental race that was interrupted several times by crashes and rain, he managed to outrun Frenchman Simon Pagenaud and Australian Will Power. Herta has been frequently mentioned as a future Formula 1 driver lately. He recorded his seventh IndyCar win, his first this season.

Power leads the championship standings with 170 points ahead of Spaniard Alex Palou (156 points) and New Zealander Scott McLaughlin (152 points). Veekay is tenth with 113 points.
