Ineos with Van Baarle, but without Pidcock in Paris-Roubaix

2:33 PM: Dylan van Baarle has been designated as one of the leaders of the British team Ineos Grenadiers for the spring classic Paris-Roubaix. The 29-year-old cyclist finished second in the Tour of Flanders this season.

Tom Pidcock will be missing from the start of the cobbled race through northern France on Sunday. The world champion in cyclo-cross and Olympic champion in mountain biking focuses on the Ardennes classics Walloon Arrow and Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

The Italian Filippo Ganna, the world time trial champion, is a co-leader at Ineos. Ganna won the Paris-Roubaix version in the U23 class in 2016, but as an elite rider, the time trial specialist has not yet achieved much in the ‘Hell of the North’. He finished out of time once and dropped out on his second participation. He was also not seen in the Flemish spring races this season.

The American Magnus Sheffield makes his debut in the race. He won the Brabantse Pijl on Wednesday. The Pole Michal Kwiatkowski, who triumphed in the Amstel Gold Race last Sunday, has also been included in the Ineos squad for Paris-Roubaix.

Grigor Dimitrov knocks out Ruud in Monte Carlo

13:49: Grigor Dimitrov has qualified for the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo masters tournament at the expense of Norwegian Casper Ruud. It became 6-3 7-5 for the Bulgarian number 29 in the world.

Dimitrov finished it after more than an hour and a half on his third match point after a ball from Ruud had landed just behind the baseline. Thus, Dimitrov qualified for the quarter-finals for the fourth time in nine appearances.

“I was really looking forward to this match. Casper is a great player and he proves it time and again at a young age. I was curious how I would be physically and mentally,” said 30-year-old Dimitrov, who is now up against the winner of the duel between the Pole Hubert Hurkacz and Albert Ramos Viñolas from Spain.

American Taylor Fritz was 7-6 (4) 7-5 too strong for his compatriot Sebastian Korda, who was responsible for the elimination of Carlos Alcaraz a lap earlier.

Novak Djokovic has already been eliminated in Monte Carlo. Rafael Nadal has withdrawn injured. Last year the tournament was won by Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece.

Poland and Slovenia new host countries Volleyball World Cup for men

13:04: Poland and Slovenia will jointly organize the World Volleyball Championship for men this summer. The tournament was initially to be held in Russia, but the international association FIVB has removed it because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki announced the news. “Russia was supposed to host the Volleyball World Cup, but you can’t imagine everyone going to listen to the Russian national anthem as if nothing happened,” Morawiecki said. “That’s why we protested against it.”

Poland has won the last two men’s World Cups and is therefore partly defending the title in its own country. The tournament will run from August 26 to September 11. The final and the battle for bronze are in Poland. The Dutch team is one of the participants. The Orange squad is classified in group F, with Argentina, Iran and Egypt as opponents.

Team Van der Poel with five Belgians and Swiss in Paris-Roubaix

12.17 pm: Mathieu van der Poel will be assisted in Paris-Roubaix on Sunday by five Belgians and one Swiss. The Dutch leader of Alpecin-Fenix is accompanied by Senne Leysen, Tim Merlier, Gianni Vermeersch, Guillaume Van Keirsbulck, Julien Vermote and the Swiss champion Silvan Dillier.

In October last year, 27-year-old Van der Poel immediately finished third in his first participation in Paris-Roubaix. In the sprint on the track in Roubaix, he only had to tolerate European champion Sonny Colbrelli and the Belgian Florian Vermeersch.

Last weekend, Van der Poel was assisted by a compatriot, Oscar Riesebeek, during the Amstel Gold Race. Van der Poel eventually finished fourth.

Willem II looking for new boss youth academy after this season

11.43 am: Willem II will be looking for a new person with final responsibility for the youth academy after this season. The Tilburg club has decided to say goodbye to Bastiaan Riemersma, whose contract expires this summer. Riemersma was employed for five years.

Since his appointment in 2017, Riemersma has been responsible for, among other things, the realization of his own complex and the improvement of the facilities. “Of course we have achieved a lot in terms of facilities, but the goal of the youth academy is to prepare and guide the step of the talents to the first team as best as possible,” said Riemersma. “It is therefore good to see that a player like Wesley Spieringhs, who comes from this region and our youth academy, has been able to take that step.”

Earlier this season, trainer Fred Grim and technical director Joris Mathijsen left Willem II. Willem II is 17th and has to fear relegation.

Spurs eliminated from NBA playoffs

08:04 a.m.: The San Antonio Spurs basketball players are eliminated from the NBA playoffs. The team of 73-year-old coach Gregg Popovich lost 113-103 to New Orleans Pelicans in the jump-offs. CJ McCollum was the Pelicans’ top scorer with 32 points. The team from New Orleans now plays against Los Angeles Clippers to determine who will enter the playoffs as the eighth team from the Western Conference.

Atlanta Hawks was way too strong for Charlotte Hornets in the jump-offs of the Eastern Conference: 132-103. The Hawks now face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the battle for the last ticket from that division to the playoffs. Six players from the Hawks scored in double digits, with Trae Young leading the way with 24 points. De’Andre Hunter made 22.

Van Dijk and Salah miss Liverpool competition match, but are fit for Champions League | Football

“We are going to put together a team that will do everything to win the game,” Klopp said. “We need to see who else is available to play. The 30 minutes we had to play extra on Saturday in our won final make a big difference. Since then, the boys have mainly been lying on the massage table. We haven’t talked about Southampton at all. This will be our sixtieth game of the season. We have to be very careful with the players, because it’s not like our season ends on Tuesday.”

Liverpool are now 4 points behind leaders Manchester City in the Premier League. With a win at Southampton, the ‘Reds’ will enter the last round on Sunday with 1 point behind. A week later, on May 28, Klopp’s team will play the final of the Champions League against Real Madrid.

“I think Southampton has had ten days of rest before this game. Those guys are all fresh. They will play their last home game of the season just before going on holiday,” Klopp said. “Of course they are going to put full pressure and shoot from all possible angles. With us, a lot of players played 120 minutes on Saturday. Why don’t we get some more rest and play this game on Wednesday or Thursday? But nobody thinks about that.”

The Orange under 17 started the European Championship in Israel on Monday with a victory over Bulgaria. The team of national coach Mischa Visser triumphed 3-1.

The Netherlands fell behind after seven minutes, but cleared that deficit before half-time. Ajax midfielder Gabriel Misehouy equalized after half an hour with a hard shot in the far corner.

Fifteen minutes after the break, the Dutch took the lead via Isaac Babadi, who scored the 1-2 with a hard shot through the inside of the post. In stoppage time Jason van Duiven determined the final score with a shot that changed direction.

The Netherlands will also play against Poland (Thursday) and France (Sunday) in the group stage. Because France won 6-1 against Poland, the French are at the top of the group after one game.

The last two editions of the European Championship under 17 were canceled due to the corona pandemic. At the last European Championships, which were held in 2018 and 2019, the Orange was the best.
