11:39 a.m.: Shot putter Jessica Schilder and pole vaulter Menno Vloon are the only two Dutch athletes to compete in Friday’s Diamond League season opener in Doha. They both meet a field with top athletes. Doha is the first in the leading series of thirteen athletics competitions this year.

Schilder will compete against the American Chase Ealey, who won silver at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade in March. Schilder surprised there with a bronze medal with a Dutch record of 19.48. In the open air, she already reached 18.89 this year. Dutch record holder Vloon jumps against the Swede Armand Duplantis, who won the title at the World Indoor Championships in a world record of 6.20 meters. Vloon has 5.96 as the highest jump.

Top poster in Doha is the men’s 200 meters with Olympic champion Andre De Grasse, world champion Noah Lyles and Fred Kerley, winner of Olympic silver in the 100 meters.

PSV removes midfielder Kaagman from England

11.16 am: Inessa Kaagman will play football in the Dutch league again next season. The 26-year-old midfielder has committed himself to PSV for two seasons. The twelve-time Orange-international comes from the English Brighton & Hove Albion.

The North Holland player previously played for Ajax for five seasons, after which she made the switch to the English competition in 2018. She played for Everton for two seasons before moving to Brighton. “I am happy to return to the Netherlands,” she says on the website of the Eindhoven Eredivisionist. “PSV is a club that has continued to make progress in recent years and has sporting ambitions that appeal to me.”

Beach duo Boermans/De Groot takes the lead in the world ranking

11.15 am: The beach volleyball players Stefan Boermans and Yorick de Groot are the new numbers 1 in the world ranking. The Dutch couple took over that position from their compatriots Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen. Boermans and De Groot finished fourth in the Challenge tournament in Doha last weekend. Brouwer and Meeuwsen were absent due to an injury to the former.

Last week, for the first time, a Dutch men’s team and a Dutch women’s team led the world rankings at the same time. In the women’s category, Katja Stam and Raïsa Schoon maintained their position at the top of the ranking after a fifth place in Qatar.

Boermans and De Groot have been a couple since the summer of 2020. Last year they won silver at the European Championships.

Swiatek ready for title prolongation in Rome

9.12 am: Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek has recovered from her shoulder injury and is aiming to prolong her title in the clay tournament in Rome this week. The world’s number 1 won the tournament last year by beating Czech Karolina Pliskova in the final 6-0 6-0.

The 20-year-old Swiatek has had a flashy season so far with tournament victories in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami and Stuttgart. She has now been unbeaten for 23 matches in a row. After her victory in Stuttgart, she took a break to let her sore shoulder recover. “I haven’t touched my tennis racket for five or six days and that was wonderful,” said Swiatek in the run-up to her first match in Rome. „It is nice that you have the opportunity to take such a break between tournaments. I feel fresher, mentally and physically.”

The first seeded Swiatek has a bye in Rome in the first round. She will meet the winner of the game between American players Alison Riske and Shelby Rogers in the second round.

Tougher penalties for racism in South American football

8.20 am: The South American Football Federation Conmebol fights racism and discrimination by introducing tougher penalties. A player who is guilty of racist behavior will be banned from now on for at least five matches or two months. A club whose supporters cross the line must count on a fine of at least 100,000 dollars (95,000 euros) and can also be punished with playing matches without an audience.

De Conmebol felt compelled to announce stricter measures after a continued series of racist incidents at matches in the Copa Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana, the South American counterparts of the Champions League and Europa League. “Heavier sanctions are needed because of the worrying increase in violations by supporters that involve discrimination, especially racism,” the union said.

Warriors extend lead over Grizzlies in NBA playoffs

07:58 am: The Golden State Warriors basketball players are one win away from a spot in the NBA Western Conference finals. The San Francisco team won its fourth game against Memphis Grizzlies in the playoffs, 101-98, leading 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. Stephen Curry played a key role with the Warriors with a score of 32 points. His striking free throws in the final phase of the game made the difference.

The Warriors played on the bench without coach Steve Kerr. He had to skip the game due to an infection with the corona virus.

Boston Celtics tied with reigning NBA champions Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference playoffs semifinals. The Celtics won game four 116-108 to make it 2-2 in the best-of-seven. Al Horford and Jayson Tatum were the sharpshooters for the Boston squad with 30 points each. The Bucks, as usual, leaned on top scorer Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Greek scored 34 points.
