Sainz completely surprised with first pole: ‘Lap didn’t feel special at all’ | NOW

Carlos Sainz had not at all expected that his fastest lap on Saturday at Silverstone would be good enough for pole position. The Spaniard settled on the soaking asphalt with Max Verstappen and can therefore start a Grand Prix from first place on Sunday.

“It was a good lap, but I had quite a hard time with the many puddles, which were mainly on the straight. It was very easy to lose control and at the same time difficult to get the tires up to temperature,” said the 27-year-old Sainz.

“At the end I managed to put in a decent lap, but to be honest it didn’t feel like a very good lap. So I was very surprised to hear that I was on pole.”

Sainz eventually left less than a tenth margin on Verstappen, who had to go off his gas due to a yellow flag. Charles Leclerc completed the top three and will start right behind his Spanish Ferrari teammate on Sunday.

Sainz gained a lot of confidence from his pole lap and looked forward to the race with confidence. “We can compete with Max, but Checo is still there. The Red Bulls were fast in the training sessions. But we are definitely going for the one-two.”

Leclerc ‘didn’t tie the round together’

Leclerc was not able to break much in qualifying at Silverstone. The Monegask was not in his rhythm and has to start behind Sainz for the second race in a row. “I didn’t tie the round together,” said the number three from the World Cup standings.

“There were a lot of puddles, but in itself I felt good in the rain. Unfortunately I made a mistake, so I could write a good result on my stomach. The positive thing is that the car was competitive in these conditions.”

Leclerc is very confident that Ferrari can compete with Red Bull on Sunday. “Max was fast in practice, but we have some margin. I firmly believe that we can be as fast as Red Bull.”

The Grand Prix of Great Britain starts on Sunday at 4 p.m. (Dutch time). Unlike Saturday it stays probably dry around the iconic circuit.
