Arsenal took over Ukrainian winger Oleksandr Zinchenko and Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus from champions Manchester City this summer. Arteta’s team impressed in the preparation with frivolous football and convincing victories against Chelsea (4-0) and Sevilla: 6-0.
Arsenal started strong against city rivals Crystal Palace, which is led by former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira. The Brazilian Martinelli opened the score with a header, after Zinchenko had also put the ball in front of the goal. The home club went looking for the equalizer after the break, but in the 85th minute Guéhi headed a cross from Bukayo Saka into its own goal: 0-2. Former Ajax player Jairo Riedewald stayed on the bench at Crystal Palace.
FRANCE: Bosz and Lyon start with a tight victory
Trainer Peter Bosz has won the opening match in France with Olympique Lyon. Lyon was 2-1 too strong for Ajaccio in front of its own audience. Both teams lost a player with a red card before half-time.
Lyon, with left back Nicolas Tagliafico who came over from Ajax in the base, was already ahead 2-0 after twenty minutes. Brazilian Tete opened the scoring on the instructions of captain Alexandre Lacazette, who is back in Lyon after five years at Arsenal. Lacazette doubled the lead moments later from a penalty kick after a foul on Tete.
However, after 25 minutes Lyon had to continue without goalkeeper Anthony Lopes, who was shown red for torpedoing an Ajaccio who had broken through. From the penalty that followed, Thomas Mangani signed for the connecting goal. In the injury time of the first half, Ajaccio also lost a player. Romain Hamouma was sent off with his second yellow card. With ten against ten, Bosz’s team held on to the lead in the second half. Lyon finished in disappointing eighth place in Ligue 1 last season and is therefore missing from Europe this season.

BELGIUM: Club Brugge loses points again with substitute Lang
Club Brugge has again dropped points in Belgium. A week after the defeat at KAS Eupen (2-1) the national champion had to settle for a point in the home match against Zulte Waregem: 1-1. Both Club Brugge and Zulte Waregem have 4 points after three competition matches. Noa Lang started on the bench, because according to trainer Carl Hoefkens he is not fully focused due to transfer problems.
The Orange international, who has often been important for Club Brugge in the past two seasons, was allowed to come in fifteen minutes before the end. Ruud Vormer also came in the final phase. However, the two Dutchmen could no longer help Club Brugge to a victory. Bjorn Meijer, who came over from FC Groningen, did have a basic place. The 19-year-old youth international was substituted in the 75th minute.
Shortly after the break, Danish attacker Andreas Skov Olsen had opened the scoring with his third goal of the season. Oleksandr Drambaev scored the equalizer about twenty minutes before the end on behalf of Zulte Waregem.
Lang (23) wants to leave Club Brugge after two years. He saw his Belgian teammate Charles De Ketelaere go to AC Milan, but the five-time international of the Dutch national team still has to wait and see whether he can also make such a top transfer. “I have spoken to Noa, he has a lot of things on his mind at the moment,” Hoefkens said before the game. “That is why we have made the choice that he will start on the bench. He is 100 percent ready to fill in.”
TURKEY: Denswil accurate at the start of the competition
Stefano Denswil helped Trabzonspor to a win at the start of the Turkish league. The Dutch defender started on the bench in the away game against the newly promoted Istanbulspor, but came into the team fifteen minutes before the end. He headed in the 0-2 in the final phase. Trabzonspor, which became champion of Turkey for the first time in a long time last season, had already taken the lead in Istanbul after fifteen minutes via the Danish striker Andreas Cornelius.
Denswil played on a rental basis for Trabzonspor last season. The 29-year-old North Hollander, who previously played for Ajax, Club Brugge and Bologna, switched definitively to the Turkish club this summer. He signed a three-year contract. Last week Denswil won the Turkish Supercup with Trabzonspor by beating Sivasspor 4-0.
