“I came here with the aim of winning a stage. If that works right away in the first stage, I couldn’t wish for a better start,” said Kooij. “I won’t say I’m at my absolute top in form, but I’m good enough to win here today. I’m glad I was able to finish it like this.”
Kooij was the first to go through the last corner and in the sprint, ahead of Pole Jakub Mareczko. The Italian Elia Viviani finished third at an appropriate distance.
The ZLM Tour consists of five stages, which go through Zeeland, Limburg and North Brabant. Kooij will ride on Thursday in the 183 kilometer ride from Veere to Goes in the yellow leader’s jersey. Earlier this year, the young sprinter won two stages and the final classification of the Circuit Cycliste Sarthe. He also recorded a stage win in the Tour of Hungary.
The ZLM Tour has been canceled for the past two years due to the corona pandemic. Mike Teunissen won the last edition in 2019.
