Doekhi makes the transfer-free transfer to the Bundesliga and will play in the Europa League next year with his new employer. Union secured its place in that European Cup last weekend. The team of the Swiss trainer Urs Fischer finished in a good fifth place in Germany.
Doekhi, who has played for Vitesse since 2012, will receive a Dutch teammate in Berlin. Sheraldo Becker has been part of the Union squad since 2019. The Germans were not the only club interested in Doekhi’s services. Clubs such as VfB Stuttgart, Norwich City and Rangers also followed the defender’s actions with above-average interest.
“I am proud that I have been able to play so many matches for Vitesse. This club has offered me a lot of space and opportunities, which has allowed me to develop myself enormously. As a footballer, but also as a person. Vitesse will always have a place in my heart,” said Doekhi, who wants to finish his period in Arnhem well. “Now we are waiting for the play-offs. That is where my full focus lies. I want to end my wonderful period here by achieving European football again.”
Vitesse reached the eighth finals of the Conference League this year. The team of trainer Thomas Letsch finished sixth in the Eredivisie and plays in the play-offs against FC Utrecht. With a win, the final awaits against AZ or sc Heerenveen.
