National coach Roberto Mancini sent goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma into the field after a completely different team than in last Wednesday’s ‘Finalissima’ against Argentina. Italy lost that match, in which Giorgio Chiellini played his last international match, 3-0 thanks to a strong Lionel Messi.
Germany was better in the first act, but Italy was closest to the opening goal. Gianluca Scamacca, former PSV and PEC Zwolle, hit the post through Manuel Neuer’s fingertips. On the other hand, Leroy Sane went wild once from a promising position.
In the second half, Italy came out better and that manifested itself in the lead twenty minutes before the end. Wilfried Gnonto, who had just come in, gave low and Lorenzo Pellegrini was ready to tap in. The lead did not last long, because Joshua Kimmich quickly made the 1-1 from the mess. Germany then persevered and put Donnarumma to work several times in a few minutes. The goalkeeper did not capitulate and so the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Germany will play the next match in the Nations League at home against England on Tuesday. Italy then receives Hungary.
