Richard Carapaz (r) and Jai Hindley battle for third place in the 16th Giro stage.

The first part of the tough final week of this Giro is over. In the ride to Lavarone, the top three of the standings again went to great lengths on Wednesday to make up for or increase time differences. Richard Carapaz and Jai Hindley did not allow each other an inch in the end. Mikel Landa lost six seconds in the final kilometres. Almeida got more than a minute to his pants. They will soon be able to catch their breath in stage 18, which should in principle be right up the alley of the sprinters. The peloton will pass through the Dolomites on Friday and Saturday, followed by the final time trial on Sunday. It threatens to turn into an absolute nail biter. That’s the way the chances are right now.
