FC Barcelona ends turbulent season with home defeat against Villarreal | NOW

FC Barcelona closed the season on Sunday with a home defeat. Villarreal won 0-2 at Camp Nou to qualify for the second qualifying round of the Conference League.

With Frenkie de Jong in the base, Barcelona fell behind on the stroke of half-time thanks to a goal from Alfonso Pedraza. After ten minutes in the second half, Moisés Gómez scored, which was preceded by a dramatic defense by Adama Traoré.

There was nothing more at stake for Barcelona in the final round of La Liga. The team of trainer Xavi already knew that they would finish second behind champions Real Madrid.

A turbulent season came to an end for Barcelona, ​​in which the club fired trainer Ronald Koeman, among others. The former and future national team coach of Orange was succeeded in November by club icon Xavi. No prizes were taken.

Against Villarreal, who secured seventh place, Memphis Depay came on as a substitute during the second half. Luuk de Jong stayed on the bench with the 26-time national champion, who has qualified directly for the Champions League.

Granada relegated after 11 years

Granada relegated on the last day of play. The club from southern Spain started the home game with Espanyol (0-0) with two more competitors under them, but Cádiz CF and Real Mallorca won and escaped relegation.

Forty-year-old Granada striker Jorge Molina missed a penalty in the 72nd minute. Granada has played at the highest level since the 2011/2012 season.

Behind Barcelona, ​​Atlético Madrid and Sevilla, who also enter the Champions League as numbers three and four, did end the season with a win. Atlético won 0-2 against Real Sociedad, while Sevilla was too strong for Athletic Club: 1-0.
