The incident happened to a camera crew from the TV program Dit is de Kwestie, which was filming at a secondary school in the Leidsche Rijn district. The team was ambushed by two men who threatened with a screwdriver. After a brief skirmish, they fled, with the equipment, in a van.
After tips from bystanders, a ‘manhunt’ followed, after which the robbers were trapped on Franciscusdreef. A camera with a tripod was found in the bus. The two occupants, aged 17 and 18, have been arrested, police said.
‘wry illustration’
“Just now that the safety of journalists in our country is under attention this week, this is a very wry illustration of this,” said editor-in-chief of the program Tenco van der Hee. “But I am especially happy that everyone was unharmed. And with the great alertness of the bystanders, which allowed the police to act very quickly.”
On Wednesday it was announced that the safety of journalists in the Netherlands is declining, according to a report by Free Press Unlimited.
This is the Issue is a new program that should appear on the tube at the end of May. The broadcast for which recordings were made was about the question to what extent the Dutch would be prepared to fight for their homeland, as is now being done by Ukrainians. Van der Hee calls it “a bit harsh” that this event is the reason for the announcement of the new program. He hopes that the captured images are still present on the recovered cameras.
Nobody hurt
No one was injured in the incident, but the EO team “was shocked,” said Van der Hee.
