Emotional Lucinda Brand also wins in 2022: ‘My thoughts are with Amy Pieters’ | cycling

Although the entire podium consisted of Dutchmen, the race was opened with an attack by the Canadian Maghalie Rochette who chose the first attack, but Brand and Alvarado quickly drove away together.

Alvarado – who struggled with her form before the winter – turned it into a nice duel with the world champion, but eventually had to recognize her superior in Brand. Betsema, who had a poor start, finished in third place. The fourth and fifth place also went to Dutch riders; Annemarie Worst and Fem van Empel.

Afterwards, Brand let her tears flow in front of Sporza’s cameras, as she mentioned the situation of her colleague and friend Amy Pieters. “It’s great to win, but unfortunately we now know that it’s not that important. My thoughts are very much with her and her family. I hope they can get some strength out of this.”

Brand (32) also won the Azencross on Thursday, a competition that is also part of the X2O Bathrooms Trophy.

The last two editions of the GP Sven Nys were won by Alvarado (23). Brand came second in 2021 and 2020.

Van Aert succeeds Van der Poel

Wout van Aert has succeeded Mathieu van der Poel as the winner of the GP Sven Nys. The Belgian won the race on New Year’s Day for the third time in his career. He was previously the best in 2015 and 2016. The past four editions of the GP Sven Nys were won by Van der Poel, who was missing in the Belgian Baal this year.

Behind Van Aert (27) of Jumbo-Visma, Briton Tom Pidcock was second, at 9 seconds. In less than half a minute, Eli Iserbyt was third. The race was tense for a long time because Van Aert as leader in the race went down and therefore had some problems with his footwear. In the end he turned out to be the boss after all.

The competition is part of the X2O Bathrooms Trophy. On Thursday, Van Aert also won the previous cross from that series.

Training Van der Poel

Incidentally, Van der Poel did train on New Year’s Day. The world champion is struggling with complaints, but nevertheless completed a ride of sixty kilometers. He drove about 61 kilometers.
