China also refrains from organizing the Asian Cup in 2023 due to corona | NOW

China also refrains from organizing the Asian Cup in 2023. Due to the corona situation, the Chinese government no longer wants to host the country tournament that is held once every four years.

The Asian Cup, in which 24 countries participate, is to be played in ten Chinese cities between June 16 and July 16, 2023. The Asian Football Association AFC says in a statement it recognizes the “exceptional circumstances caused by COVID-19” and shows understanding for the decision of the Chinese.

In recent weeks, more sporting events have been canceled in China, such as the Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Hangzhou in September, and the Diamond League athletics competitions in Shanghai (July 30) and Shenzhen (August 6).

China is trying to contain the corona crisis with strict measures. The residents of Shanghai have been in lockdown for more than a month and in other cities, such as the capital Beijing, the population is being tested frequently and lockdowns are threatening due to rising corona figures.

It is not yet clear which country will take over the organization of the Asian Cup. The previous edition, in 2019, was in the United Arab Emirates. Qatar was crowned champion there.

Tallon Greek track was eliminated on Thursday at the ATP tournament in Geneva. The 25-year-old tennis player was no match for the tall American Reilly Opelka in his first quarterfinal of the year. Arantxa Rus also failed in the quarterfinals of her last tournament in the run-up to Roland Garros.

The fourth-seeded Opelka (ATP-18) needed just over an hour and a half to beat Greek track: 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3.

The Dutchman seemed to have a minor injury in the first set, but he was able to continue playing. He did get a double break behind and that cost him the set win. In the second act, Greek track showed fine tennis. He broke Opelka in the sixth game and tied the score again in the game.

Greek track was then immediately broken in his first service game of the third set and the American service gun did not relinquish that lead. Opelka, who hit a total of fourteen aces, used his first match point with a 5-3 lead.

Greek track (ATP-64) has been eliminated in the first round in Marseille, Indian Wells, Miami, Marrakesh, Monte Carlo and Rome in recent months. In Geneva, he reached the quarterfinals for the second time this year. At the start of this season, he was in the last eight in Melbourne but had to withdraw due to injury.

The tournament in Switzerland was the last preparation for Roland Garros, which starts on Sunday. Like Botic van de Zandschulp, he has been placed directly for the Grand Slam in Paris. Tim Van Rijthoven has to survive one more qualifying round on Friday to participate in the tournament.

Arantxa Rus can also focus on Roland Garros.

Rus falls at WTA tournament in Rabat

Arantxa Rus also failed to reach the semifinals in her last tournament for Roland Garros. The Dutch lost in the quarterfinals in Rabat to Martina Trevisan, the global number 85. It became 7-6 (4) and 6-3 for the Italian.

Rus, the number 76 in the world, managed to make it to the last eight of a WTA tournament for the first time this season in the Moroccan capital. In October, she managed to do that for the last time, in Tenerife.

The best tennis player in the Netherlands is now going to Paris for the main tournament of Roland Garros, which starts on Sunday. The best performance of the South Holland player at the clay tournament in Paris is reaching the fourth round in 2012.

The second Grand Slam tournament of the year was won last season in the women by Barbora Krejcíková. The men’s win went to Novak Djokovic.
